Production improvement strategies that employ both physical and modern molecular techniques will be introduced. Laboratory will emphasize the selection of industrially important microorganisms, the theory and operation of a fermentor for the production of proteins, antibiotics, and steroids, use of analytical equipment for monitoring product formation, enzymes analysis, downstream processing, and bio-reactor construction and design. May be taught concurrently with BIO 512. Cannot receive credit for both BIO 512 and BIO 613.
