Art Education Certificate

Program Description


This certificate aims to advance students’ artistic styles and research skills as an art educator by focusing on the development of artistic expression and creative theories in visual arts. It equips students to make art through various theories in aesthetics and art criticism. This program provides a deeper understanding of contemporary art education and develops novel ways to teach art, manage classrooms effectively, and develop curricula useful in the contemporary classroom. Examining, developing, and improving studio production, media manipulation, and technical expertise while enhancing critical components of contemporary scholarship are the goals of this certificate. This certificate program provides artists and teachers an opportunity to upgrade their preparation in both professional education and subject matter areas appropriate to their teaching fields. The curricula are designed to enhance student learning from various areas to provide a comprehensive understanding of current issues in art education by experiencing its structures, organizations, and protocols. While this certificate program does not provide certification or recertification for teaching art education, it provides continuing educational experiences that may be used for advancement. In addition, the graduate credits completed for this certificate can be applied directly to the completion of the Master of Art Education degree.

Admission Requirements


  1. Applicants are required to have a bachelor’s degree in art or art education from a college or university accredited by agencies recognized by Missouri State University.
  2. Applicants must submit a scholarly writing sample or samples of studio practice and a statement of purpose.
  3. A completed Missouri State University Graduate Application.
  4. Admission decisions will be made by a committee of Graduate Faculty in the Department of Art and Design.

GPA Requirement


A minimum GPA of 3.00 is required to earn the certificate.
