Accelerated Option - MAT
Accelerated Master’s Degree Option-Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
The MAT Accelerated Master’s degree option provides Missouri State University undergraduate students, who are not a part of an educator preparation program, the opportunity to enroll in a combined baccalaureate and master’s degree program. Initial educator certification at the Master’s level in one of the eligible certification areas is available through the MAT Program.
Admission Requirements:
- Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Junior status or 60+ credit hours already earned.
- You must have at least one full semester remaining as an undergraduate student.
Application: Eligible Missouri State University undergraduate students may apply for preliminary acceptance into the MAT program through the GradCAS system after admission requirements for the accelerated options have been satisfied. GradCAS application should indicate the start term as the semester following your graduation for your bachelor’s degree.
If accepted, a maximum of 12 credit hours from the approved graduate-level courses may be counted toward both the graduate and undergraduate degrees.
Mixed Credit Accelereated Graduate form with required signatures (Student, MAT Program Director, Academic Unit Leader(s) of student’s undergraduate major, Graduate College) should be completed each semester.
A student may be admitted to the Graduate College and the MAT program upon the completion of the requirements for the baccalaureate degree. Full admission to the Graduate College is contingent upon meeting the existing admission requirements set by the Graduate College and the MAT program.

To receive the Master of Arts in Teaching Degree, and initial teacher certification, the teacher candidate must:
- Complete the required number of credit hours as listed in the Master of Arts in Teaching Program and Degree Requirements.
- Complete all MAT-required coursework with at least a 3.0 grade point average, plus meet Missouri State Graduate College grade requirmenets and degree requirements.
- Meet all Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary (DESE) certification and assessment requirements.
Advisement
Advising will be facilitated by the MAT Academic Advisor in cooperation with the MAT Program Director. The Office of Professional Education Services will monitor the certification process. Content area requirements are determined by the Professional Education Services office as part of the transcript analysis process.
Research and Comprehensive Examination requirements
Candidates will enroll in SFR 781 - Applied Educational Research , which will provide instruction on how to utilize and implement educational research to enhance their classroom practice. This course will introduce candidates to action research and culminate in a research project presented to the SFR 781 professor during the course. This project will satisfy their comprehensive examination requirement.
