MTH 770 - Mathematical Practices I Credit Hours: 3
This course is part of a three-course sequence designed to deepen the specialized mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge of practicing secondary mathematics teachers. The focus of this course is on developing an understanding of the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice which are SMP 1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them; SMP2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively; SMP 3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others; SMP 4: Model with mathematics; SMP 5: Use appropriate tools strategically; SMP 6: Attend to precision; SMP 7: Look for and make use of structure; and MP8: Look for and express regularity in reasoning. The content-deepening aspect of the course will focus on the areas of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
